Sri Lanka is often called the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” and honestly, no other description fits it better. It’s a tiny island, but it packs an unbelievable punch.
I rented a window seat on the famous coastal train ride from Colombo to Galle. As the train chugged along inches away from the crashing waves of the blue ocean, with coconut palms swaying in the breeze, I knew this trip was going to be special.
In Sri Lanka, you can wake up wrapped in the cool mist of endless green tea plantations in Ella, and by afternoon, you can take a safari jeep to watch wild elephants roaming freely in Yala National Park. And the people? Incredibly warm. Everywhere I went, someone was waving hello with a genuine, bright smile.
It has the slow, romantic pace of a tropical island combined with deep, centuries-old history.
Quick Tips for Your Sri Lanka Trip:
-
The Train Ride: Do not miss the train journey through the hill country (especially Kandy to Ella), it’s rated one of the best in the world.
-
Stay local: Book family-run homestays; the homemade traditional rice and curry they cook will blow your mind.
-
Pace: Don’t rush. Sri Lanka is meant to be enjoyed slowly, with a cup of Ceylon tea in your hand.
Some places you visit and forget. Sri Lanka is the rare kind of place that quietly stays in your thoughts long after you’ve returned home.
